COMPANY AT THE FAIR OF GREEN IDEAS, PROJECTS AND INNOVATIONS

Monday, 05.06.2023.

HBIS Serbia Company was one of the participants in the Fair of green ideas, projects and innovations, which was organized June 5 – on the occasion of World environment day in Belgrade, on Kalemegdan.

In the exhibition part of the Fair, our project “Introduction of new Programmable logic controllers (PLC) for data processing from the MEAC system on continuous dust meters” was presented. The PLC processes the data from the installed continuous dust meters and timely alerts the production operators in the event that half-hourly legal emission limits may be exceeded. In addition to which, on the HBIS Serbia company web site , data on the measurement of emissions are published daily, which ensures the transparency.

Our project, together with the other presented, was evaluated as an innovative solution for the green transition in the Western Balkans. It is one of the 16 best projects and the first of four selected in the first phase projects for co-financing in the field of “Decarbonization, energy efficiency and reduction of industrial emissions”. In addition to this field, the second one was “Application of circular economy for resource efficiency and industrial symbiosis” with 6 selected projects, the third field were “Pollution reduction with an emphasis on air quality” projects 4 of which were to be co-financed in this phase, and the fourth “Protection and investment in biodiversity and ecosystems”, out of which two projects were selected for co-financing.

Permanent representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Serbia, Jakup Beriš, said that 47 innovations were presented at the Fair and emphasized that teamwork is what is necessary to solve environmental problems: “The idea is to expand all of this. We can achieve the desired results only if we work together: both businessmen, and scientists, and international organizations, and governmental and non-governmental sectors.”

These projects with solutions to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases contribute to the decarbonization of the economy, the reduction of environmental pollution and the achievement of ecological, social and economic benefits for local communities and citizens.

“We would like to become the first continent that will be carbon neutral in 2050,” said the head of the EU Delegation in Serbia, Emanuel Joffre.

The “EU Green agenda in Serbia” initiative, which strengthens the green transition of our country and its path to the European Union, was launched back in 2021 by the EU delegation and the Ministry of environmental protection of Serbia. It is being realized thanks to the support from the European Union, through a project implemented by UNDP in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden, the country that holds the presidency of the EU and the European Investment Bank, with additional financial resources from Sweden, Switzerland and Serbia.

RESULTS OF DUST EMISSION REDUCTION PROJECT PRESENTED IN COMPANY HBIS SERBIA

RESULTS OF DUST EMISSION REDUCTION PROJECT PRESENTED IN COMPANY HBIS SERBIA

Monday, 10.04.2023

In HBIS GROUP Serbia, a meeting was held on April 10, where the management of the Environmental Protection Department and Sinter Plant presented the results of the project “Introduction of new PLC for data processing from MEAC system on continuous dust meters of the New Sinter Line”. The representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which supported the installation of light and sound alarms on three emitters on the New Sinter Line, as part of the project “EU or Green Agenda in Serbia”, as well as representatives of the local community – the City of Smederevo and the local communities of Radinac, Vranovo and Ralja attended the meeting.

After presenting the company HBIS Serbia and results of this project, as well as the current projects and improvements in the field of environmental protection according to assignments following the IPPC permit obtained last year, the participants of the meeting visited the New Sinter Line. They were presented with a simulation of sound and light alarm signals installed on continuous meters as well as the reaction of plant employees in such situations.

“The company installed continuous meters on 8 emitters in the factory, as required by law. We saw that with good process management and management of work methods, we could keep dust emissions under control at those emitters. A new PLC system was introduced in December 2022 on all 8 emitters. It is a separate control system, a computer with a specially developed program, which continuously processes data in real time, so production employees can react accordingly and adjust production processes in situations where legal limits may be exceeded. With this project, we set the goal of reducing the number of half-hourly exceedances by 80 percent, and our expectations are that we do not have a single half-hourly exceedance of more than 100 milligrams per cubic meter, which has been achieved since the beginning of this year”, said Ljubica Drake, the general manager of Environmental Protection in the company and emphasised:

“Average daily values with three continuous meters of the New Sinter Line with installed alarms are most often from zero to 5 mg/m3, which can be monitored online. A part of this project is enabling all interested parties to see the average daily values of dust from new sinter line emitters, so that these data are shown on the company’s website. The solution given through this project could also be applied in other companies, such as cement plants and thermal power plants. The support for this project is very important to HBIS Serbia because this recognizes the effort and progress invested in environmental safety in the factory.”

HBIS Serbia is one of the companies that answered the public appeal as part of the initiative “EU for green agenda in Serbia“. Our two projects qualified for co-funding, while the project of installing logic controllers (alarms) on continuous meters of New Sinter Line was supported. UNDP decision to support this project followed due to its positive environmental effects, as well as the impact on the local community and the population living in the vicinity of this industrial plant.

UNDP representatives emphasised that the initiative “EU for green agenda in Serbia“, which contributes to the green transition project is specific because it supports both the private sector and large companies that are also big polluters in order to jointly affect pollution reduction, decarbonisation, energy consumption and reducing gas emissions with the greenhouse effect.

Monday, 20.02.2023

At the award ceremony regarding the new green transition solutions, organized by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia, on February 20, 2023 in Belgrade, awards were presented to HBIS Serbia and other companies that proposed the best solutions for green transformation of Serbian economy, addressing the innovation challenges within the project “EU Green Agenda in Serbia”. The award was accepted by Executive Director for Technical Support Zhao Kaixing on behalf of the company.

General Manager for Environmental Protection Ljubica Drake says that the company HBIS GROUP Serbia applied for funds from the EU for the first time last year through the project led by UNDP. “We have entered the competition with 4 projects, two out of which entered the acceleration process, that is, second round. A project that was immediately approved because it was ready for funding was the continuous meter alarms, which are located on the transmitters that require it. Alarms imply sound and light signalling when reaching a certain level of concentration of powdery substances in the air, and for that project, the funds we received were invested in the installation of alarm systems in the New Sinter Plant. This is the first time that the EU donation project includes the private sector, and we are the first company that received EU funds through UNDP for the implementation of projects in the field of environmental protection.”

This system for continuous data collection and data processing will enable better control and management of production processes in order to reduce emissions of dust into the air. A system (Programmable Logical Controller – PLC) that will continuously process data from the 8 installed meters was introduced. Data are processed in real time, so production employees will be able to adequately react and adjust production processes in situations where legal limits may be exceeded. Additional value of this idea is that the average daily values of measured emissions from 3 meters of the New Sinter Plant will be available to the public and published every day on the company’s website. Additionally, this system can be applied by other companies that have the obligation to continuously measure how many polluting particles they emit into the air, for example cement factories and thermal power plants.

A MEETING WAS HELD WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF SMEDEREVO LOCAL COMMUNITIES

A MEETING WAS HELD WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES OF SMEDEREVO LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Thursday 04.10.2023

The company HBIS GROUP Serbia was visited by the mayor of the city of Smederevo, Jovan Bec, and representatives of the local communities of Smederevo, Radinac, Vranovo and Ralja today. In the presence of the host, they toured the New Sinter Line, and then had a joint meeting.

The general director of the company, Wang Lianxi, recalled that since the company took the Steel Mill over in 2016, it had invested over 300 million euros in projects that are mainly focused on environmental protection. “The most important thing is that this is just the beginning and we plan to continue investing in some more environmental projects, to stay here for a long time and to work hard and improve our performance. We also received an Integrated (IPPC) permit recently for the Smederevo location and we have outlined in our plans to reach the level of emissions prescribed in the EU by 2025. At the same time, everyone’s understanding and patience is necessary, because this is a multi-decade problem that we have inherited, and we will certainly spare no effort to solve it in the coming years”, Wang said.

The presentation was held by Ljubica Drake, general manager of Environmental Protection, who emphasized that the company has 8 continuous meters on emitters (chimneys). “The central emitter on the New Sinter Line has a triple dedusting system: an electric filter, a bag filter and a gas desulfurization system. We have a continuous meter on it and the maximum dust on it is up to 2mg/m3, and our limit is 50 mg/m3. This is a big improvement now. Although we have never had a problem with Sulphur, we did introduce gas desulphurisation, expecting that the laws would become more strict in the future, so we have also preempted that. Among the projects undertaken by the company, which led to the improvement of the influence of HBIS GROUP Serbia, is first and foremost the commissioning of the New Sinter Line. Stable road spraying systems were installed, as well as regular washing, cleaning and asphalting of roads, control of emissions from emitters on continuous dust meters, monitoring increased thanks to new measurements and video surveillance. The control of the delivery and unloading of raw materials has also been increased, along with the control of their humidity. Regarding the external influences we find the influence of the traffic, boiler houses, meteorological conditions, individual fire pits contributing as well,” Drake concluded.

The executive director for production, Vladan Mihailović, highlighted the advantages of the three new plants, which are energy efficient, because they use blast furnace gas instead of expensive natural gas and have a minimal impact on the environment. The New Sinter Line is designed according to the best available technology and this plant uses only blast furnace (BF) gas. The BF Gas Reservoir enables the distribution and higher consumption of the BF gas for other consumers in the factory, and it’s also being used by the new Walking Beam Furnace at the Hot Strip Mill.

The representatives of local communities praised the new improvements that HBIS GROUP Serbia is making through new projects related to environmental protection. They also spoked about pressing current issues in the surrounding villages, which jointly, with the help of the company, could be solved, such as the greening of the part of the belt outside the perimeter of the factory, the arrangement of green areas and footpaths that are important and useful to the citizens.

The Smederevo City Mayor, Jovan Beč, said that thanks to the Steel Mill, a large number of fellow citizens obtained new jobs, which means a greater inflow into the budget for the City. “I would like to thank HBIS GROUP Serbia for the care and investments in environmental protection, and we also heard that there are many plans in the future. I am glad that there is a dialogue with the residents of Radinac, Ralje and Vranovo, who are in the immediate vicinity of the factory, that you do hear each other out and that we all have the opportunity to see these results and future plans, because I am sure that we all together are on the same task”, concluded the Mayor.
