RESULTS OF DUST EMISSION REDUCTION PROJECT PRESENTED IN COMPANY HBIS SERBIA

Monday, 10.04.2023.

In HBIS GROUP Serbia, a meeting was held on April 10, where the management of the Environmental Protection Department and Sinter Plant presented the results of the project "Introduction of new PLC for data processing from MEAC system on continuous dust meters of the New Sinter Line". The representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which supported the installation of light and sound alarms on three emitters on the New Sinter Line, as part of the project "EU or Green Agenda in Serbia", as well as representatives of the local community - the City of Smederevo and the local communities of Radinac, Vranovo and Ralja attended the meeting.
After presenting the company HBIS Serbia and results of this project, as well as the current projects and improvements in the field of environmental protection according to assignments following the IPPC permit obtained last year, the participants of the meeting visited the New Sinter Line. They were presented with a simulation of sound and light alarm signals installed on continuous meters as well as the reaction of plant employees in such situations.
"The company installed continuous meters on 8 emitters in the factory, as required by law. We saw that with good process management and management of work methods, we could keep dust emissions under control at those emitters. A new PLC system was introduced in December 2022 on all 8 emitters. It is a separate control system, a computer with a specially developed program, which continuously processes data in real time, so production employees can react accordingly and adjust production processes in situations where legal limits may be exceeded. With this project, we set the goal of reducing the number of half-hourly exceedances by 80 percent, and our expectations are that we do not have a single half-hourly exceedance of more than 100 milligrams per cubic meter, which has been achieved since the beginning of this year”, said Ljubica Drake, the general manager of Environmental Protection in the company and emphasised:
“Average daily values with three continuous meters of the New Sinter Line with installed alarms are most often from zero to 5 mg/m3, which can be monitored online. A part of this project is enabling all interested parties to see the average daily values of dust from new sinter line emitters, so that these data are shown on the company's website. The solution given through this project could also be applied in other companies, such as cement plants and thermal power plants. The support for this project is very important to HBIS Serbia because this recognizes the effort and progress invested in environmental safety in the factory."
HBIS Serbia is one of the companies that answered the public appeal as part of the initiative “EU for green agenda in Serbia“. Our two projects qualified for co-funding, while the project of installing logic controllers (alarms) on continuous meters of New Sinter Line was supported. UNDP decision to support this project followed due to its positive environmental effects, as well as the impact on the local community and the population living in the vicinity of this industrial plant.
UNDP representatives emphasised that the initiative “EU for green agenda in Serbia“, which contributes to the green transition project is specific because it supports both the private sector and large companies that are also big polluters in order to jointly affect pollution reduction, decarbonisation, energy consumption and reducing gas emissions with the greenhouse effect.
